That feeling of overwhelming anxiety that sets in on Sunday afternoon when you realize the weekend is over? The sunday scaries are real my friends. Here are five ways to beat the sunday scaries that help soothe my anxiety and set me up for a productive, calm week.
Draw yourself a detox bath
There’s a lot of hype around baths right now. I’ve read various studies saying that a 30-minute hot bath can be a replacement for a cardio workout or that a ginger bath, can help you sweat out a cold or a hangover. (Hangover theory to be confirmed, but ginger baths have helped me feel better during a cold). I have to admit, I was never a bath person. The thought of laying there in dirty water.. (you get the idea) never appealed to me, until I was trying to find a way to soothe my anxiety and de-stress. I always add some form of epsom salt and put the water on the hottest degree possible. Depending on the time of day, I’ll switch up the epsom salts. Mid-afternoon? Try Relax & Relief Eucalyptus & Spearmint Soaking Solution. Closer to bed time? Enjoy Soothe & Sleep Lavender Soaking Solution.
While dry brushing before the tub (see dry bursting below) I love to do a mask (latest find is actually a pairing of two masks so I can paint on the areas of particular concern. Restore for hydration and Detox for getting rid of all of the bad stuff). In the tub pair that relaxation time with a great read (currently reading: “Where the OM am I?” by Sarah DiVello – she’s a local Boston gal!) and with a cold glass of collagen beauty water. I’ve been using The Beauty Chef’s Collagen Inner Beauty Boost for the past two months and love it! It’s vegan, tastes great and my nails and hair are growing like weeds. The jury is still out on my skin, as I have noticed my face feels softer, but that could be due to more than just this beauty potion (more to come in a future post on that!).
Oh, and don’t forget to buy a super handy bath caddy to help your stuff stay dry while you soak.
This is one of those “are you serious?” trends. And, I’m so serious. It feels so good to exfoliate and visibly see an immediate difference with dead layers brushing off. Using a long brush is my favorite way to get those hard to reach spots you normally forget about. I typically do this 3x a week before my bath or shower.
I always start at my feet and brush upwards towards your heart, in a circular motion for 3-5 mins total. Dry brushing helps increase circulation, obviously exfoliates and can help smooth the appearance of cellulite. Be sure not to use too hard of bristles on your brush (I use this one), or too harsh of a grip. It’s meant to be gentle. Don’t forget to drench your skin in moisture post-shower.
Roll, roll, roll with a Jade Roller
Another hot, hot, hot trend I had to try: jade rollers. I’ve heard of people wearing jade for it’s energetic properties, warding off evil in Chinese culture. To use, put on your fave face moisturizer (right now I’m using FAB’s ultra repair face moisturizer to combat winter harshness) and get rolling. Start at your forehead and roll down on both sides. Use the smaller stone for around your eyes and make sure to start from inner eye to outer, making your way down the cheek bone in a big circle, as this promotes lymphatic drainage. The stone gets cold on its own, but you can keep it in the fridge for an even more soothing effect.
Essential oils are one of the easiest mood boosters. Wear them with a carrier oil (I do wrists, ankles and neck) or simply diffuse them within your home. The best part? Depending on your mood you can customize your scents for whatever you’re needing.
Make sure to call Jen from Saratoga Aromatherapy, she’s an upstate New York CA & LMT who I highly recommend. She does a free consultation call to discover your needs and make recommendations for you, based on what she hears. Her custom essential oil blends range from $25-40.
